SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Oct. 7 (UPI) -- The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has given General Dynamics C4 Systems a $25 million first production order for new air traffic control radios.
The CM-300/350 radios are software defined and feature built-in voice over Internet protocol. They will be installed in airport terminal air traffic control sites, regional control centers and other aviation facilities.
"The FAA estimates that the number of air travelers will almost double in the next 20 years, which underscores the importance of these radios in keeping air traffic controllers communicating effectively with every pilot in an increasingly congested and complex national airspace," said Chris Marzilli, president of General Dynamics C4 Systems.
The first production order for CM-300/350 radios follows a $10 million initial award to General Dynamics to qualify and certify the new radios under an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity award to the company last year as part of the FAA's Next Generation Air-Ground Communications Segment 2 program.
