Uralvagonzavod, which produces the T-72 tank, did not release the BMPT-72's specifications but said it features an upgraded fire-control system and added turret weapon station protection.

Like its BMPT predecessor, it is built on the platform of the T-72 tank.

The company said countries that operate T-72 tanks "can promptly and at minimum cost upgrade their armies to ultra-modern level, enhance its capacity, mobility, protection and armament without purchasing new high-cost machines" with the BMPT-72.

Uralvagonzavod's T-72 is Russia's main battle tank and first entered service in 1971. It weighs 45.7 tons and has a range of 290 miles (430 miles with fuel drums).
