SEOUL, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Lockheed Martin announced the South Korean military took its first C-130J Super Hercules cargo plane on its maiden voyage from a South Korean production facility.
Lockheed confirmed the South Korean military took its first Super Hercules to the skies for an inaugural flight.
"This C-130J is scheduled for a 2014 delivery to the Republic of Korea Air Force, a legacy C-130 operator," the company said in a statement Wednesday.
Lockheed says the C-130 is capable of a variety of missions ranging from combat support to refueling and weather reconnaissance.
It said 15 countries have selected the Super Hercules as their choice for airlift requirements. It's been in production longer than any other military aircraft in history.
A July assessment from Military.com said the Super Hercules tops the list of the Defense Department's increases in project coasts. It said the cost of a service plan for 168 of the aircraft is estimated at $15.5 billion, about 18 times the original estimate.
Lockheed did not indicate how many of the aircraft were slated for South Korean delivery.
