Northrop sponsors UAV challenge in Australia

CANBERRA, Australia, July 26 (UPI) -- Northrop Grumman in Australia is promoting knowledge of unmanned aerial vehicles and their utility in civilian application to students.

The promotion is in the form of a competition in partnership with Dickson College in Canberra in which students will design, develop, build and fly a UAV capable of delivering supplies to an individual in the countryside.

"This is a great opportunity to mentor tomorrow's leaders in aerospace and other technical career fields and to help create a future generation of aerospace professionals with a focus on UAVs," said Ian Irving, chief executive, Australia, for Northrop Grumman. "Forging this partnership with Dickson College provides students with tangible ways to explore and develop their field of interest -- whether that is engineering, mathematics, science or project management."

The challenge is part of a larger program promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, which is sponsored by government, industry and research organizations.

Dickson College is a private, senior-level (grades 11 and 12) high school.
