Thailand seeks Lakota helicopters

WASHINGTON, June 24 (UPI) -- The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency reports Thailand is seeking to purchase six UH-72A Lakota helicopters.

The possible sale is worth an estimated $77 million and would include associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support.

This proposed sale will contribute to Thailand's goal to upgrade and modernize its military forces with a new light utility helicopter capable of meeting requirements for rotary-wing transportation, while further enhancing greater interoperability among Thailand the United States and other allies," the agency said in its notification to Congress.

The DSCA said the primary contractor would be EADS North America. U.S. government and/or contractor personnel would also be required to travel to Thailand for five weeks for equipment deprocessing/fielding, system checkout and training.

A contractor service representative would also be required to remain in Thailand for a period of one year.

The UH-72A Lakota is manufactured by American Eurocopter, a subsidiary of EADS North America. It has a cruise speed of 153 mph and a range of 426 miles.
