EDA selects defense projects for possible co-funding

BRUSSELS, April 25 (UPI) -- Six pilot dual-use projects have been selected by the European Defense Agency to have access to European Structural Funds for research and development.

Specifics of the projects -- from Poland, Germany, Britain, Portugal, France and Bulgaria -- weren't disclosed but the agency said they involve intruder detection and collision avoidance systems or advance detection sensors for urban security and defense.

"EDA will now accompany these projects to access available EU resources for research and innovation, in line with identified technological and industrial priorities," the agency said.

European Structural Funds are for use by member states to co-fund dual-use activities in the areas of research and innovation "as part of a national or regional smart specialization strategy." So far 13 countries have submitted about 70 project proposals to EDA, which will assess their potential to receive funding.

The agency this month presented its initiative to promote the best use of European Structural Funds and earlier had workshops on the potential use of European Structural Funds to support maintaining and developing key technical and industrial priorities.
