Thailand receives more Gripens

LINKOPING, Sweden, April 8 (UPI) -- The Royal Thai Air Force has received three more Gripen fighters from Sweden, bringing its fleet of Saab aircraft to nine.

The single-engine Gripen is a multi-role fighter with a maximum speed of 1,372 miles per hour at altitude and a combat radius of 432 miles.

Thailand in 2008 ordered a total of 12 Gripen fighters through an arrangement with the Swedish Defense Export Agency. The contract also provided for logistic support and training, for which Saab deployed personnel to Thailand.

The first six Gripens were delivered in 2011. The final three will be delivered this summer, Saab said.

Saab's Gripen fleet when complete will consist of both "C" and "D" models of the airplane. Thailand also ordered an electronic warfare Saab also ordered a Saab 340 with Erieye radar and the Swedish RB 15F missile system, both of which have been delivered.

Delivery of the aircraft involved overflying seven countries.
