Australia holds industry challenge

CANBERRA, Australia, April 8 (UPI) -- The Australian military is holding an industry challenge to demonstrate automatic target recognition software.

The Defense Science and Technology Organization, part of Australia's Department of Defense, said the challenge is to demonstrate how ATR software compares with a performance aggregate of all participating producers in the efficiency of their software and in identifying imagery from high-resolution sonars.

"DSTO has thousands of images taken from a sonar aboard its REMUS 100 autonomous underwater vehicle," it said. "The sonar frequency is 900kHz and the maximum range is 98 feet to 164 feet.

"Researchers from DSTO's Maritime Operations Division are keen to see how a range of automatic target recognition software performs in detecting mine-like objects in our images."

Individual scores of products in the competition will not be published but DTSO said it would publish the aggregate performance of software from all the participants.

Additional details of the challenge were not immediately available.
