Navy to look into noise-reduction research

BLACKSBURG, Va., March 25 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy has tapped six universities and two companies to help reduce the noise of fighter aircraft engine noise.

The project to reduce noise exposure on aircraft carrier flight decks and engine noise experienced by communities near air bases or in the path of jet flyover is called the Hot Jet Noise Reduction program.

It's part of a broader Navy effort called the Noise Induced Hearing Loss program, which is partially funded by NASA.

"It is a subject that has received very little attention in the military world since it doesn't improve military vehicle performance," said Todd Lowe, an assistant professor in the Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering at Virginia Tech University.

The 4-year initiative involves Virginia Tech, Brigham Young University, California Institute of Technology, University of Illinois, University of Mississippi and Pennsylvania State University. Two companies -- Cascade Technologies, Innovative Technology Applications Co. -- are also involved.

All will work independently to come up with a possible solution to the problem.

Virginia Tech said it would receive $600,000 for its research efforts.
