TEWKSBURY, Mass., March 12 (UPI) -- Raytheon's newest generation of medium frequency, hull-mounted sonar will be used on a prototype trimaran as part of a U.S. military project.
The subcontract for the Modular Scalable Sonar System was given to Raytheon by Science Applications International Corp., whose unmanned vessel is being developed for the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel program.
The system to be delivered is the first of Raytheon's fifth-generation system.
"Historically, manned sonars were central to anti-submarine warfare missions," said Joe Biondi, vice president of Advanced Technology for Raytheon's Integrated Defense Systems business." However, the growing number of submarines traversing the world's oceans makes this model unsustainable.
"By leveraging Raytheon's heritage in developing undersea sensors, MS3 can be configured to provide the capabilities required for ASW in an autonomous environment," Biondi said.
The Modular Scalable Sonar System is designed to autonomously provide search, detection, passive-threat filtering, localization and tracking capabilities.
