PARIS, March 5 (UPI) -- Main terrestrial and satellite communications networks in EU states will be studied by Thales of France for the European Defense Agency.
The study is for the EDA's future communications program -- FUCOM -- and will involve making an inventory military communications. FUCOM will then propose ways of combining resources for interoperability.
"To ensure interoperability in a context where few frequency bands are available, wireless communications need to be harmonized," Thales said.
"EU member states have tended to address this issue in a piecemeal approach, through a varying array of developments and standards that are not always compatible with each other. This has resulted in a loss of overall efficiency and has made it increasingly difficult for forces to cooperate on multinational operations."
The European Defense Agency's FUCOM project has four phases: identification of operational scenarios and capability requirements, including an inventory of the main existing space-based communication systems and terrestrial systems; technical characterization of communication systems needed to support operational scenarios; identification of possible capability gaps in the future; and analysis of the radio frequency spectrum.
