Sagem's electro-optical system for Navy

PARIS, March 4 (UPI) -- Sagem of France is supplying multifunction, gyrostabilized optronic systems for use aboard eight French navy vessels.

The company system, Electro-Optical Multifunction System-New Generation, enables 360-degree infrared surveillance, identification, tracking, laser range finding and fire control for self-defense.

The system concept, Sagem said, is based on high-rate panoramic shots that give it the observation capability equivalent to 100 fixed cameras.

The contract was received from the French naval shipyard, DCNS, which will begin installing the systems on the amphibious and projection vessels beginning next year.

Each vessel will be outfitted with two units, which will operate in tandem.

Sagem said that, under separate contracts, it is also producing EOMS-NG systems for six French navy Floreal class surveillance frigates and six Baynunah class corvettes to be deployed by the United Arab Emirates.

Australia has also ordered variants of the system for LHD helicopter carriers, air defense destroyers and frigates.
