NEUILLY-SUR-SEINE, France, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- NATO's protected satellite communications capability is to be upgraded by Thales of France to enhance performance and reduce operational costs.
Thales reports the contract received was issued by the NATO Communications and Information Agency. It didn't, however, disclose the monetary value of the award or a timeline for modernization work on the NATO Electronic Protective Measures Modem System.
Enhancement to the system, which allows NATO to deploy protected satellite communications links between anchor stations and transportable satellite ground terminals, will involve boosting performance for high-rate data links and improving the spectral efficiency of the transmission links.
The NATO-EMS is based on Modem 21e, the Thales EPM transmission system for land, sea and air communications using a common transmission core.
"The Modem 21e incorporates the best of SATCOM technology to respond to all constraints of integration in military platforms, combining advanced protection against jamming, interference and fading, dynamic resource allocation and full compatibility with SATCOM On-the-Move applications," Thales said.
