NEUILLY-SUR-SEINE, France, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The French Justice Department has chosen Thales to design new devices to expand the use of electronic tagging of non-custodial criminal offenders.
The new electronic tagging system is to be designed, deployed and operated by Thales starting this year, the company said. The system will feature uninterrupted geo-location, and a modular architecture that ensures interoperablity with other systems and future technological upgrades.
Thales reports that its consortium partners, G4S and Onet Securite, are involved in the project. G4S will provide its newest electronic monitoring devices and monitoring application software -- including a multi-functional GPS tag -- while Onet Securite will be in charge of the tele-surveillance and call center operations as well as training services for prison administration officials.
"The Ministry of Justice is a major customer for Thales, and we are considered a trusted partner on critical projects," said Laurent Maury, vice president of Thales Services.
"This particular project, which breaks new ground both commercially and technologically, is a key opportunity for Thales in a new field that offers potential for rapid growth in Europe and many other parts of the world."
