Thailand orders STARStreak

LONDON, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- The Royal Thai Army has contracted Thales UK to provide it with the STARStreak air defense missile system.

STARStreak is a very short-range system for defense against low-level aircraft. It utilizes tripod-based light-weight multiple launchers and will be a key element in Thailand's effort to modernize its air defense capabilities.

"STARStreak is the leading VSHORAD system in the world today, enabling nations to protect key assets against both emerging and established threats," said Alex Cresswell, vice president for Land Defence at Thales UK. "We are delighted by the selection of this system by the Royal Thai Army and will work with our customer to ensure a smooth delivery into-service and through life support."

Details of the contract -- value, number of systems to be provided and their delivery schedule -- were not disclosed. Thales UK, however, said it was a multimillion dollar deal.

British military forces deployed STARStreak and its LML system at the London 2012 Olympics to protect against terrorist attack.
