STEVENAGE, England, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Nose radomes for use on a Brazilian military transport are to be designed and manufactured by Cobham Antenna Systems of Britain.
The contract for the radomes was received from Embraer S.A.
They will be used on the KC-390, a medium-sized, twin-engine jet transport being developed by Embraer for the Brazilian air force.
In addition to transporting troops and cargo, the KC-390 will have an aerial refueling capability.
"We look forward to building upon the relationship between Embraer S.A. and Cobham, first established on the AMX Fighter program," said Fred Cahill, vice president of Cobham Antenna Systems.
"We expect to perform preliminary and detailed design activities this year, with manufacturing of prototypes and qualification during 2013 in readiness for first flight of the prototype in March 2014."
Radomes are enclosures that protect microwave or radar antennas. Cobham manufactures a wide range of radomes, which are installed on military and civilian aircraft.
