LINKOPING, Sweden, June 20 (UPI) -- U.S. Special Operations Command has contracted Saab of Sweden to provide it with additional Carl-Gustaf, man-portable recoilless rifles.

The Carl-Gustaf is an 84mm shoulder-fired anti-tank and anti-personnel weapon. The launcher weighs 25 pounds and is 42 inches in length. Its effective range is 200-1,300 yards, depending on ammunition used.

The value of the contract is about $25.8 million, the company said, and delivery of the recoilless rifles will take place in July 2013.

"Having this system in service and combat proven with U.S. Special Operations Forces is yet another stamp of approval and proof of the continued confidence that the U.S. Special Operations Command customer has in our company and our products," said Saab North America President Dan-Ake Enstedt.

The Carl-Gustaf 84mm recoilless rifle system is used by the militaries of more than 40 countries. U.S. Army Rangers in 1990 were the first American unit to adopt the Carl-Gustaf system.
