LONDON, May 21 (UPI) -- Three new ships for the Turkish Navy being built by Istanbul Shipyard will be powered by Rolls-Royce systems, the British company announced.
The ships are a submarine rescue mother ship and two rescue-and-towing vessels.
Under the contract received, Rolls-Royce will supply tunnel thrusters and retractable thrusters for all three. In addition, Rolls-Royce will provide its Azipull main propulsion thrusters for the submarine rescue mother ship.
Azipull thrusters rotate degrees, providing high maneuverability without the need for a rudder. Rolls-Royce said the order for the unit is the first the company has received from the Turkish Navy.
"The Turkish Navy is an important customer, with whom we have a strong relationship," said Sam Cameron, Rolls-Royce, senior vice president-Naval Sales and Business Development. "Our technology is particularly well suited to naval applications and we look forward to developing the relationship with both the Istanbul Shipyard and the Turkish Navy in the future."
Neither the value of the contract received nor delivery schedules for the propulsion systems were disclosed.
