Qatar orders Renault MRAPs

VERSAILLES, France, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Qatar's internal security forces are bolstering their capability with the addition of Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles from France.

Renault Trucks Defense said the order from the Qatari ISF is for 22 HIGUARD MRAPs and five Sherpa light armored personnel carriers.

The HIGUARD is based on Renault's 20-ton Sherpa medium 6x6 vehicle and can carry as many as a dozen fully equipped personnel.

The Sherpa APC Security and Law Enforcement version can deploy 10 troops.

Renault said both are designed to military standards and offer high mobility and crew protection.

"This order is the result of four years of discussions with the ISF," the company said. "The quality of Renault Trucks Defense vehicles is recognized by the ISF, which had already acquired other vehicles from the brand's range."

The value of the contract wasn't disclosed but Renault said the vehicles would be delivered next year and in 2013.
