Brazil's F-5s receiving upgrades

HAIFA, Israel, April 11 (UPI) -- The Brazilian subsidiary of Elbit Systems of Israel has received an $85 million contract to upgrade 11 F-5 fighters flown by the Brazilian Air Force.

The follow-on contract from Embraer Defense and Security to AEL Sistemas, includes engineering services and the delivery of all system equipment, including the mission computer, display systems, radar, EW system, ammunition management system and other avionics products.

In addition, AEL will supply a flight simulator, spares and ground support equipment.

"Through significant investments and ongoing joint programs, AEL has become a center of excellence for avionics and the follow-on award attests to the customer's satisfaction with our performance track record," Joseph Ackerman, president and chief executive officer of Elbit Systems said. ""We trust that the new contract will further strengthen the excellent cooperation between AEL, Embraer and the Brazilian Air Force, and we hope that other customers will decide to follow Brazil and select our combat-proven upgrade programs."

Elbit received contracts in 2001 and 2007 for Brazilian F-5 aircraft upgrades.
