Germany orders Cassidian soldier systems

PARIS, March 4 (UPI) -- More German troops in Afghanistan are being outfitted with integrated soldier systems from Cassidian, part of Europe's EADS Group.

The order, from Germany's Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement, is for 400 units of the Future Soldier System in its basic version.

The system for equipping an infantry squad includes modular bullet-proof vests in protection class I to IV; C4I equipment, including NaviPad for situational awareness and transmitting messages, target data and images; night vision devices; tactical radios; and various special items, such as laser range finder, camera and thermal image sighting devices.

Cassidian, with headquarters in Germany and France, said the order is part of an immediate procurement measure by Germany for troops serving in the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

The company didn't disclose the monetary value of the contract.

Cassidian earlier this week announced the Swiss defense procurement authority, Armasuisse, had contracted Cassidian for the advanced production engineering of the IMESS program (Integrated and Modular Engagement System for the Swiss Soldier), which will enhance the command-and-control capabilities of Swiss forces through the use of helmet-mounted displays, night-fighting and reconnaissance systems and navigation aids.
