"The IBCS program is critical to the Army," said U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Genaro Dellarocco, program executive officer, missiles and space, Redstone Arsenal, Ala."It will serve as the backbone for Army air and missile defense."

IBCS will provide the U.S. military with a open-architecture and "mission-tailorable" command system for air and missile defense.

Executives at Northrop Grumman said getting the design review completed in just more than a year shows the program "is off to a great start."

Northrop Grumman received the contract for the program in December 2009.
