WASHINGTON, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- The Homeland Security Department has announced plans to allocate new funding to strengthen security capabilities at several U.S. airports.
Janet Napolitano, Homeland Security Department secretary, announced the Transportation Security Administration will received $35.4 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The new funding is expected to pay for next-generation explosive threat detection baggage handling systems and new surveillance technologies among other equipment to improve security.
"These state-of-the-art technologies will bolster security for travelers across the country," Secretary Napolitano said in a statement.
"Infusing Recovery Act funds into critical airport projects will create jobs while making Americans safer."
