ANKARA, Turkey, March 27 (UPI) -- British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett Tuesday kicked off a three-day visit to Turkey.
During her first official stay in the country in her current position, Beckett will meet with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan as well as Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul and chief European Union negotiator Ali Babacan, among others.
The British Foreign Office said Beckett will focus on three issues during her time in the country, namely Turkey's role in the Middle East, its example as an Islamic democracy and the country's role in the EU. In addition, the office said she will address how Turkey can help in meeting the global challenge of energy security and climate change.
"The UK and Turkey's relationship is built on two-way practical co-operation. My visit gives me an opportunity to see and discuss first hand the practical benefits for both our countries working together," Beckett stated.
