MANILA, Philippines, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- The Philippine military, with help from U.S. forensic experts, are examining skeletal remains that may be those of terrorist leader Khadaffy Janjalani.
Janjalani is head of the Abu Sayyaf Group, an Islamist organization in the southern Philippines believed connect with Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida.
"It is not yet confirmed (the remains are his) because we need to be sure by having the skeletal remains investigated through forensic or DNA tests, The Philippine Star quoted Brig. Gen. Juancho Sabban, commander of the 3rd Marine Brigade.
According to the newspaper, authorities said the body was found in a shallow grave in Patikul, Sulu, near the site of a September battle between the military and Abu Sayyaf.
Janjalani was believed seriously wounded in the fighting.
Gen. Sabban said four ASG militants who surrendered to authorities recently led troops to the grave, which they claimed was Janjalani's.
