Patriarch marches against Israeli barrier

RAMALLAH, West Bank, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Michel Sabbah, joined a march Sunday in the West Bank against the Israeli separation barrier.

After conducting Sunday mass in a church in the village of Aboud north of the West Bank town of Ramallah, Sabbah joined Palestinian leaders and activists in the demonstration.

The Patriarch urged Christians and Muslims to continue confronting the separation barrier that Israel has been erecting on Palestinian territories.

He called on "believers of all religions" to stand together to prevent Israel from continuing the construction of the wall.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators in the same village of Aboud and forcibly prevented them from reaching Palestinian agricultural lands being excavated by Israeli bulldozers to make way to erect the separation fence.

Eyewitnesses said several people were injured and the army arrested an Israeli peace activist at the site.

Israel says it is building the 420-mile long fence on Palestinian property in the West Bank to avert suicide bombers.
