OMV said the Latif field was declared an economically feasible project to develop last year. It was discovered in 2007 and is located next to natural gas plants that OMV operates in the area.

Pakistani leaders say the country's dilapidated energy infrastructure is creating power shortages. The Austrian energy company said natural gas from the Latif field will be supplied to domestic gas distribution companies.

OMV serves as the operator of the natural gas field in a partnership that includes Italian energy company Eni.

The Austrian company added it commissioned processing facilities from the Mehar natural field in Pakistan. The field is located to the west of Sindh province. Full production of 4,300 barrels of oil equivalent per day is expected by 2014.
