LONDON, April 3 (UPI) -- The British government said it gave consent for the development of an onshore wind farm in Wales that could generate as much as 84 megawatts of power.
A spokesman for the British Department of Energy and Climate Change said developer RWE Npower can go ahead with the construction of a 28-turbine wind farm in southwestern Wales.
The proposed wind farm will have an installed capacity of as much as 84 megawatts and provide enough energy to meet the annual demands of about 40,000 homes.
A DECC spokesman said the development would help ensure the country's environmental objectives.
"Onshore wind has an important role to play as part of a balanced energy mix," a statement read.
The DECC reported that offshore wind energy generation increased more than 50 percent during the latter part of 2012 while onshore wind increased 38 percent.
British Energy Secretary Ed Davey said London remains committed to a goal of getting 30 percent of the country's electricity generated by renewable resources by 2020.
