ENI ups Mozambique gas estimates

MILAN, Italy, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- A natural gas discovery off the coast of Mozambique is 50 percent larger than estimated last week, Italian energy company ENI said.

ENI last week announced it made an "impressive" natural gas find at the Mamba South discovery, which was said to contain as much as 15 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. During deeper drilling, the company said it found a new pool that holds as much as 7.5 trillion cubic feet of gas.

"ENI considers that this discovery can lead to a potential of up to 22.5 tcf of gas in place in the Mamba South area," the company said.

ENI said the discovery could lead to major developments in the natural gas sector in Mozambique. This includes access to regional and international markets through liquefied natural gas capacities.

The discovery was made in the deep waters about 25 miles north of Mozambique.
