Gazprom finds new field near Sakhalin

MOSCOW, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Russian energy company Gazprom announced that it discovered a natural gas field associated with its Sakhalin project in the Far East.

"Gas and condensate inflow was reported in the prospecting well during the exploration operations," the Russian energy company stated. "The well testing will be followed by the reserves estimation."

The field was the second discovery for Gazprom in the Kirinsky prospect within the Sakhalin III project.

Sakhalin III is off Russia's Pacific Coast. An estimated 2.25 billion barrels of oil and 1.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas are in the Sakhalin region. Most of it is in the Kirinsky prospect that was initially scheduled to start producing gas in 2014.

In August, Gazprom Deputy Chairman Alekhsandr Ananenkov traveled to Pyongyang and Gazprom head Alexei Miller went to visit both the North Korean capital and Seoul for further talks about a potential natural gas pipeline.

Ananenkov signed an agreement with South Korean gas authorities to consider options of shipping natural gas from the Sakhalin-Khabarovsk-Vladivostok natural gas transportation system to South Korea.
