Chevron, NASA to explore deep waters

SAN RAMON, Calif., July 26 (UPI) -- U.S. supermajor Chevron said it was teaming with scientists at NASA to explore a range of technologies to improve recovery of oil and natural gas.

Chevron said it formed an alliance with scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to develop technologies for application in oil and natural gas recovery in deep-water operations.

Chevron executives said the research conducted by NASA for interplanetary missions like the Mars rover program is useful in understanding the geology of the Earth. The same technology that transmits information of millions of miles in outer space can help energy companies examine deep-water resources thousands of feet below the ocean floor, the company said.

"The world's energy needs continue to grow," Paul Siegele, president of Chevron Energy Technology Co., said in a statement. "Chevron continues to meet this demand through the development and application of highly innovative technologies that unlock resources in ways that are safer, more efficient and more environmentally sensitive."

The company didn't disclose the terms of the deal with NASA's JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology.
