Moscow to host oil pipeline talks

MOSCOW, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Bulgarian officials are expected in Moscow in September for talks on the construction of a 174-mile oil pipeline, a Russian energy official announced.

Simeon Dyankov, the deputy prime minister of Bulgaria, will lead a delegation to Moscow in September to discuss the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline.

Igor Dyomin, a representative from Russian oil pipeline monopoly Transneft, said Sofia representatives would "see a presentation" on the pipeline at talks scheduled for Sept. 8, Russia's state-run news service RIA Novosti reports.

Bulgaria in 2007 signed an agreement with Russia and Greece to build the 174-mile Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline to bypass crowded waterways near Turkey by crossing an overland route to the Aegean Sea

Sofia said last year that the terms of the Burgas-Alexandroupolis contract wouldn't deliver an economic benefit to the country, however.

In June, Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko said delays from Sofia were creating problems for the pipeline, describing the project as "practically suspended."
