BUENOS AIRES, April 15 (UPI) -- Moscow aims to spend billions of dollars to help Argentina develop its civilian nuclear energy program, the Russian president said in Buenos Aires.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev traveled Thursday to Argentina following a visit to Washington for a high-profile nuclear summit.
Medvedev said the expected arrival of Russian nuclear company Rosatom in Argentina could spur domestic nuclear energy development, Russia's state news agency RIA Novosti reports.
The arrival of Rosatom, the president said, "will lead to a several-billion-dollar investment intended to be spent on the creation of ... nuclear reactors, as well as on the development of infrastructure."
Argentina has two nuclear power plants in service. A third is under construction. Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner said a fourth was under consideration.
Argentina abandoned a nuclear weapons program in the 1990s. Kirchner stressed there was no intention of returning to militarization.
At least 10 bilateral documents were signed between the two leaders during the meetings.
The visit by Medvedev to Argentina is his first.
