CINCINNATI, March 19 (UPI) -- Authorities in southwest Ohio said about 240 barrels of oil spilled from a pipeline system controlled by Sunoco into a 300-acre wetland preserve.
Sunoco Logistics said in a statement its emergency response crews contained the release from its Mid-Valley pipeline system and recovery of the spilled oil is underway. The company said Tuesday it had notified state and local authorities of the spill.
"The pipeline was immediately shut down remotely on either side of the release area. Initial estimates are that 240 barrels were released," it said. "The cause of the release is under investigation."
Crews from Colerain Township fire department, in southwest Ohio near Cincinnati, said in a separate statement they determined the spill posed a "significant threat" to the Oak Glen Nature Preserve, a 300-acre plot.
The Mid-Valley pipeline runs approximately 1,000 miles from Texas to refineries in the Midwest. It's designed to carry about 240,000 barrels of foreign and Gulf of Mexico crude oil per day.
No injuries were reported and no wildlife appeared to be impacted by the spill. Federal officials said no oil was seen in the nearby Great Miami River.
