EDINBURGH, Scotland, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- The Scottish government said a nod for an offshore wind development center in Aberdeen cements the wind energy sector firmly in the region.
"Aberdeen is already of global importance for hydrocarbons and this wind deployment center cements its role in renewable offshore development, further positioning Aberdeen as the energy capital of Europe and a world energy center," the government said in a statement Tuesday.
The development center will give renewable energy developers a proving ground for wind power technology. The Scottish government envisions at least 11 turbines at the site off the Scottish coast.
U.S. real estate mogul Donald Trump lost his effort to stop the development, which he said would interfere with the aesthetics from a golf course he owns nearby. He was quoted by the Daily Telegraph as saying he'd appeal the decision.
The Scottish government said it was "pleased" the court ruled in favor of the development center.
Scotland has one of the most ambitious renewable energy targets in the world. It set a goal of generating 100 percent of its electricity from renewable resources by 2020.
