HAUGESUND, Norway, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Norwegian survey company DeepOcean said it secured a contract to conduct inspections for the Nord Stream natural gas twin pipeline system in the Baltic Sea.
DeepOcean got a two-year contract from the consortium controlling the pipeline through the Baltic to Germany.
Ivar Sordal, commercial director for the company, said securing the contract was a primary ambition for DeepOcean.
"DeepOcean is very pleased to be the preferred survey service provider to the pipeline operator Nord Stream AG," he said in a statement Thursday.
Sordal said surveyors would use underwater vehicles to inspect the twin pipeline system. Inspections are expected to last four to six months for contract years 2014-15.
Russian energy company Gazprom has a controlling stake in the Nord Stream pipeline consortium.
The Nord Stream lines are each designed to transport about 1.9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas annually. The first leg of the pipeline system went into service in 2011.
