AAA: Gasoline prices hold steady at $3.31

WASHINGTON, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the United States held steady Monday at $3.31, AAA reported.

The price was unchanged from the previous day and slightly down from the same time last week, the organization said.

. None of the 50 states reported an average price below the $3 mark. Montana was closest at $3.01.

AAA spokesman Avery Ash said in a statement last week the average price for 2014 should be less than the previous year because refineries are expanding to keep up with the increase in U.S. oil production.

"Increased refinery capacity and domestic crude oil production should help provide a cushion in case something goes wrong, but there are no guarantees when it comes to gas prices," he said. "There will remain an outside chance of paying higher prices due to unexpected global events or significant economic growth."
