PARIS, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- French energy company GDF Suez announced it was investing in a thermal power project in India that could produce as much as 1 gigawatt of energy.

"This initial project in India is in line with the group's strategy of investing in fast growing markets and gives the group an entry point into the Indian power sector through an economically attractive state," the French company said in a statement Monday. "India has a growing demand for energy and a significant power supply deficit."

No financial terms of the investment were disclosed. The French company holds a 74 percent equity interest in the project alongside Meenakshi Energy and Infrastructure Holdings.

Thermal power stations use steam to drive turbines for electricity. The French company in early December announced similar developments were under way in Peru.

GDF has a stake in liquefied natural gas projects in India through partnerships with Indian energy companies.
