ESSEN, Germany, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- The sixth wind farm brought online in Poland shows the country is emerging as a success story for renewable energy, German company RWE Innogy said Wednesday.
RWE Innogy inaugurated the Nowy Staw wind farm in Poland. It's the sixth wind farm in the country for RWE and can generate enough energy from wind to meet the annual demands of more than 50,000 homes.
"Wind power in Poland is a success story," Paul Coffey, chief operating officer at RWE Innogy, said in a statement.
The company said it took just over a year to install 22 wind turbines over a 5.7 square mile area near the Polish city of Gdansk. RWE said the wind farm was built and connected to the Polish energy grid on schedule with an installed capacity of 45 megawatts.
RWE said Poland is one of its premier wind energy markets. It has an installed onshore wind energy capacity of 200 MW in the country.
A European renewable energy directive calls on members to ensure they get 20 percent of their energy from renewable resources by 2020.
