CAIRO, July 8 (UPI) -- Multinational oil companies with operations in Egypt said they were monitoring the national security situation closely.
The Egyptian military last week removed Mohamed Morsi from power. He survived 13 months in office as the first president elected by a democratic vote in Egyptian history.
Egyptian news service al-Ahram reported Monday at least 40 people were killed during clashes between pro-Morsi demonstrators and the Egyptian military in Cairo.
British energy company BP said it evacuated 60 members of its staff from Egypt in response to the violence. The company left behind 40 essential employees. British rival BG Group said it pulled 100 of its 150-strong workforce out of the country because of the violence.
Fuel prices were among the concerns expressed by those supporting Morsi's ouster last week. Egypt is a major natural gas producer and BP and BG Group said their operations in the country were unaffected by the violence.
A Royal Dutch Shell statement published Friday by the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph said the company was "following the situation in Egypt closely."
