Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay casino's convention center going green

LAS VEGAS, July 3 (UPI) -- A major rooftop solar installation will sit atop the Mandalay Bay Resort's convention center in Las Vegas, a solar energy company announced.

The solar power subsidiary of NRG Energy Inc. said it teamed up with MGM Resorts International for a 6.2 megawatt solar power array atop the casino's convention center.

The convention center, one of the largest privately owned in the world, is attached to the Mandalay Bay casino. The 1 million-square-foot convention center's rooftop spans about 20 acres. When operating at peak capacity, the solar array will meet about 20 percent of the structure's electricity demands.

MGM and NRG said the solar installation is part of an overall green effort envisioned by MGM Resorts International, the casino's parent company.

"Partnering with NRG Solar to install the solar rooftop at Mandalay Bay highlights a major milestone in our efforts to promote renewable energy and reduce our consumption of the planet's limited resources," MGM Chairman Jim Murren said in a Tuesday statement.
