KAMPALA, Uganda, April 8 (UPI) -- There are enough resources in the Lake Albert region of Uganda to support the development of a crude oil export pipeline, French supermajor Total said.
Total moved into Uganda following a deal last year with frontier development company Tullow Oil and China National Offshore Oil Corp.
Uganda is eager to exploit resources tied to the Lake Albert region, which is estimated to hold as much as 2.5 billion barrels of oil.
Total's regional manager Ahlem Friga-Noy told Ugandan newspaper Daily Monitor that building a pipeline from the Lake Albert region is key to the future success of the country's energy sector.
"Discussions at the highest level have been held between the Ugandan authorities and the three oil companies (CNOOC, Total and Tullow) on this issue," she said. "We are hopeful that parties will soon reach a convergence of views on the development and the commercialization scheme."
Total said it expected to produce as much as 230,000 barrels of oil production per day from the Lake Albert region by 2020. The supermajor gave no indication of the investments needed to develop an export pipeline from Uganda.
