ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, April 8 (UPI) -- The Polish government plans to take a careful look at plans by Russian energy company Gazprom to build a pipeline through its territory, a minister said.
Polish Economics Minister Janusz Piechocinski met in St. Petersburg with Gazprom Chief Executive Officer Alexei Miller to review prospects for hosting a section of the Yamal-Europe natural gas pipeline
"If the Russian side puts forward any proposal to speed up this initiative ... then we will respond to it," Piechocinski was quoted by Russia's state-run news agency RIA Novosti as saying.
Miller said a second leg of the pipeline could carry as much as 530 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day by 2018.
Polish and Russian governments agreed on the project in the 1990s. The Polish government said last week the situation changed because of its accession to the European Union.
Poland in 2014 plans to build a liquefied natural gas terminal and has development plans in place to examine the shale natural gas potential.
Russian President Vladimir Putin gave the orders last week to build the second leg of the pipeline.
