Pipeline planned for Ohio's shale play

HOUSTON, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Michigan utility company DTE Energy said it teamed with energy companies to develop a natural gas transmission system to deliver shale natural gas from Ohio.

DTE said it signed a memorandum of understanding with Canadian pipeline company Enbridge and natural gas infrastructure company Spectra Energy Corp. The agreement calls for the development of about 250 miles of pipeline meant to carry as much as 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day from the Utica play in Ohio.

Project partners said the pipeline would service the Ohio, Michigan and Ontario markets through various interconnections that parallel existing arteries.

Ohio hosts portions of the Marcellus and Utica plays, two of the richest shale deposits in the United States.

Anadarko Petroleum, one of the more active energy companies in Ohio, said it delivered 9,500 barrels of crude oil and 12 million cubic feet of natural gas from one well in the Utica play.

A spokesman for energy company Marathon recently told an Ohio newspaper that the company relies on road transit to deliver natural resources produced from Ohio.

Ohio may need additional natural gas pipelines to cope with the boom in the Utica shale play, the spokesman said.
