Eni posts another success in Mozambique

MILAN, Italy, May 17 (UPI) -- Italian energy company Eni said it made a natural gas discovery in Mozambique that holds at least 7 trillion cubic feet of gas.

Eni announced its Coral 1 exploration prospect, in the deep waters off the coast of Mozambique, contains 7 trillion-10 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in place. The discovery lies within the Mamba complex.

"This discovery is particularly significant since it confirms a new exploration play, which is independent of those drilled so far in previous Mamba wells," the company said in a statement. "Eni will run a production test on the Coral 1 discovery."

Eni last year described the prospect as the largest discovery in the company's exploration history.

The company, considering the prospects at Coral 1, estimated there are at least 15 tcf of gas in the exploration area.

Eni had said the discovery could lead to major developments in the natural gas sector in Mozambique. This includes access to regional and international markets through liquefied natural gas capacities.
