CAIRO, March 23 (UPI) -- The World Food Program expressed concerns about food supplies in Libya and for those trying to flee the conflict.
The U.N. Security Council passed a resolution last week permitting international military intervention to protect civilians from attacks by forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. In February, Gadhafi was referred to the International Criminal Court for allegedly ordering attacks on unarmed civilian protesters.
The U.N. World Food Program said it was concerned about access to food in Libya. The agency said food prices in the country have increased as much as 110 percent in parts of the country and nearly all of the stores in cities under attack by Gadhafi's forces are shuttered.
The WFP said it increased provisions available for those people trying to cross Libya's borders by airlifting emergency aid to the region. The agency said it had representatives on both sides of the borders working to coordinate and strengthen the humanitarian relief effort.
