London gets high marks in green reform

BRUSSELS, March 7 (UPI) -- The United Kingdom was the only regional economy to see energy usage decline during the first eight years of the 21st century, a report finds.

The European Commission in a review of regional energy efficiency found that energy usage in the United Kingdom fell more than 5 percent from 2000-08. Consumption in Germany and France rose by 7 percent during the same time period and overall usage in the European Union rose by more than 4 percent, The Guardian newspaper in London reports.

The United Kingdom did well in terms of advancements in renewable energy and was the only area in the region to see energy use drop.

EU Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger this week is expected to call on individual states to take action to help meet the regional goal of improving energy efficiency 20 percent by 2020.

Oettinger's recommendations are expected to be on par with each national economy, the newspaper adds.

The review comes before climate officials in the European Union prepare to lay out an outline for how the EU will cut greenhouse gas emissions even more drastically by 2050.
