The project has been granted mega power project status by the Indian government and is reportedly the largest single order awarded for power transformers in India.

Under the $26.6 million contract signed with Powergrid, Areva will upgrade the sub-transmission systems in the state of Bihar by extending the existing substations and building additional 33kV bays.

"Areva has always believed in a new India where energy is a driving force. Therefore, we are proud to be a key partner in the enhancement of the country's power transmission and distribution networks," said Karim Vissandjee, chief financial officer of Areva's transmission and distribution division.
