AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Global oil giant Shell should use its profits to clean up the environment, Friends of the Earth International said in a report released Wednesday.
The environmental group was part of the Shell Accountability Campaign, which worked out costs of cleaning up damages the company had caused in Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, Curacao, Brazil, the Philippines, Ireland and Barbados as well as the United States.
"Shell's sky high profits over 2006 are made at the expense of people and the environment. We present here the unpaid bills. Jeroen van der Veer of Shell should acknowledge his responsibility for this and allocate money to clean up the mess he made. Today's report and full page advertisements prove that public pressure on Shell is growing," said Paul de Clerck, corporate campaigner at Friends of the Earth International.
