NEW YORK, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Sony revealed its future plans for Playstation including a more powerful Playstation 4 Pro console alongside a slimmed down Playstation 4 base model.

On Wednesday, during a keynote presentation in New York City, Sony kicked things off with its new smaller Playstation 4 model that will be replacing the original in stores starting Sept. 15 for $299.

"When comparing the new PS4 model to the current model, we've reduced volume by 30 percent, weight by 16 percent, and power consumption by 28 percent," noted President and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Andrew House on the company's Playstation Blog.

The electronics giant is using the high-end machine to pursue 4K and HDR visuals in gaming.

"With PlayStation 4 Pro our goal is to deliver innovation in the form of cutting-edge visuals and graphics while in the midst of the PS4's lifecycle," House continued on Playstation Blog.

The new console is set to launch Nov. 10 for $399 and promises to enhance select old and upcoming PS4 games "by supporting the latest in imaging technology through 4K resolution and High Dynamic Range (HDR), as well as smoother frame rates."

"With more pixels, 4K's higher resolution delivers graphics that are sharper and have greater detail than ever imagined. HDR enables visuals to look much closer to the way your eyes see the real world," House said.

The company assured fans that the Pro is meant to be a premium option for consumers within the Playstation 4 family that plays the same games and downloads from the PS4. It is not a next-generation replacement for the console.

The Pro will come packed in with a larger 1TB hard drive, double the GPU power of the base model PS4 and technology adapted from AMD's Polaris graphical architecture.

Sony displayed titles such as Spider-Man, For Honor and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided running on the Pro on a 4K display while older titles such as Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Infamous: Last Light and Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor were shown taking advantage of HDR support.

Activision's incoming Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was even announced as taking advantage of the extra horsepower the Pro affords when it launches in November.

Sony also pointed out however that users who purchase a Pro can still take advantage of higher graphical settings and frame rates within select games without the use of a 4K or HDR enabled television or display. Additionally, HDR support will be coming to the base Playstation 4 model via an upcoming system software update.

On the streaming side, the Pro will feature new apps from Netflix and YouTube that offer content in 4K including Netflix's Narcos Season 2 and Marvel's Luke Cage. Notably, the Pro will not have a 4K blu-ray drive.
